Registration via Affiliate Mentoring
The Affiliate Mentoring Pathway is for Affiliate Members who have built extensive professional experience and wish to become Registered.
Who this is for
- Affiliate Members with a design, urban design, planning, or related qualification
- Those with at least 450 weeks (around 10 years) of practice, including 4+ years in Aotearoa
Requirements
- Experience must be gained in a professional team including at least one Registered Member (or equivalent overseas)
- Completion of the same mentoring process as Graduate Members
- Submission of a workbook portfolio signed off by a Mentor, Group Mentor, and reviewed by the Registration Panel
Key steps
- Confirm you meet eligibility requirements
- Choose a Mentor (must be Registered for at least 2 years)
- Notify NZILA by emailing admin@nzila.co.nz that you are choosing the Affiliate pathway.
- Meet regularly with your Mentor to track progress. Your mentor is a key assessor of your competency and will be signing off various assessment criteria along the way.
- Attend compulsory group mentoring workshops and optional seminars
- Complete your Assessment Workbook and portfolio
- Submit your application by 30 September in the year you plan to interview
- Attend the Registration Interview in November
Ready to apply?
Mentoring
You can apply for mentoring anytime, noting the requirement is minimum 60 weeks so the deadline each year is 1 August to meet requirements for interviews the following November.
You will be invoiced $100 + GST once you have applied and your mentor has accepted. Your participation in the programme will be confirmed once the invoice is paid.

Applications for November interviews, including all required documentation regardless of pathway, must be completed by 30 September.
An invoice for the application fee of $499 + GST will be issued on receipt of the application.
