A new book from landscape architect and NZILA Fellow David Irwin brings together four decades of thinking, observation and design practice in Aotearoa.

Meditations of a Landscape Architect, published by Six Point Press in association with Isthmus, is a collection of essays and photography developed across different moments in David’s career. Rather than a project history or a guide to design, the book follows his ongoing process of looking, writing, drawing, making and questioning what design is, and what it might be for.

The essays move between professional practice and everyday experience, from cities, coastlines and oceanscapes to drawing, coffee, family and conversations with friends and colleagues. David’s photography sits alongside the writing, offering another way of looking at landscape, people, place and the details that catch his eye.

David is a founding principal of Isthmus Group and a Fellow of Tuia Pito Ora NZILA. Across four decades of practice, his work has spanned urban development, town centres, coastal landscapes, public spaces and residential planning.
