Landscape Architect - Principal

Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington

Shape significant places, lead outstanding design, and help grow our landscape architecture practice.

About the role

At Boffa Miskell, landscape architecture is about creating thoughtful, enduring places that strengthen connections between people and the environment. We are looking for an accomplished Principal Landscape Architect with a strong design vision and leadership capability to join our Wellington team.

You will play a key role in setting design direction and leading the delivery of significant, multidisciplinary projects across Aotearoa. From early concept development through to detailed design and construction, you will bring strong design judgement, creativity and technical expertise to guide and curate high-quality, cohesive design outcomes.

Beyond project delivery, you will help strengthen our Wellington landscape architecture team. You will provide design leadership, technical oversight and mentoring, building the confidence and capability of early and mid-career landscape architects and fostering a collaborative design culture.

You will also contribute to the strategic growth of the Wellington practice, building trusted client relationships, identifying new opportunities and working closely with our national landscape architecture team to deliver outstanding outcomes.

About You

You are an experienced Landscape Architect who combines design excellence with strong commercial judgement, collaborative leadership, and a commitment to achieving positive design outcomes for people and place.

You have 15+ years’ experience in a comparable landscape design role, including previous consulting experience, and can demonstrate:

  • Design excellence and leadership: A compelling portfolio demonstrating strong design vision, creativity and the ability to lead and curate high-quality landscape architectural outcomes
  • Communication and collaboration: An effective communicator who can clearly articulate design ideas, engage confidently with clients and stakeholders, facilitate constructive design discussions, and inspire and bring teams together around a shared design vision.
  • Complex project delivery: Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and project teams through all stages of delivery.
  • Design and technical judgement: The ability to navigate competing project requirements, resolve complex design challenges and maintain design integrity throughout delivery.
  • Team leadership and mentoring: A genuine commitment to developing others, providing constructive design critique, sharing knowledge and building a strong, collaborative team culture.
  • Client relationships and communication: The confidence to engage with clients, stakeholders and project partners, articulate design ideas and build trusted professional relationships.
  • Practice development: Commercial awareness, market knowledge and the ability to identify opportunities, develop new work and contribute to the growth of the Wellington practice.
  • Professional expertise: A bachelor’s degree (Hons) or master’s degree in landscape architecture, strong technical and digital design capabilities, and registration with the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects. Proficiency in a range of digital design tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD and SketchUp, would be advantageous.
