BHW Studio is a small but growing landscape architecture and project management practice based in Hamilton. We specialise in designing playgrounds and public spaces that enrich communities and create lasting impact.
We are seeking a Landscape Architect (ideally intermediate or senior) to join our team and provide parental leave cover for a valued team member.
This position is offered as a fixed-term role to cover parental leave and is expected to be for approximately 12 months. We are seeking someone who can work 30 hours per week, with flexibility to increase hours for the right candidate. Subject to workload and business needs, the role may continue beyond the fixed-term period.
About the Role
This role offers a balance of creative design, technical delivery, stakeholder engagement, and project leadership.

- Approximately 12-month parental leave cover
- Approximately 30 hours per week preferred, with flexibility to increase to full-time for the right candidate

Responsibilities include:
- Landscape concept design and master planning
- Public space, park, and playground design
- Detailed design and construction documentation
- Planting design and specification writing
- Graphic presentation and visual communication
- Client, consultant, and stakeholder coordination
- Site observation and construction support
- Facilitating workshops, presentations and engagement activities
- Project planning, delivery, and quality assurance
- Leading projects and mentoring team members (depending on experience)
About You
In a small, busy firm with diverse projects and clients, we require someone who is agile, organised and collaborative, and combines strong creative thinking with practical project delivery experience.
Essential:
- A recognised qualification in Landscape Architecture
- 5+ years’ professional experience within a landscape architecture or design-led practice
- Experience designing and delivering public realm, parks, open space, recreation, infrastructure, or development projects
- Experience in community engagement, a sound understanding of New Zealand’s cultural landscape, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Te Ao Māori in design practice
- Exceptional graphic communication and presentation skills, including hand drawing.
- Advanced Adobe Creative Cloud skills (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
- Strong CAD capability
- Experience preparing technical documentation, specifications, and reports
- Strong communication, organisational, and relationship-building skills
Additional experience that would be welcomed includes:
- Project leadership or staff mentoring experience
- Local government project experience
- Knowledge of New Zealand planning and consenting processes
- Skills in SketchUp, Lumion, GIS, Revit, or similar software
- NZILA membership, registration, or progress toward registration
