Student/Professional Wānaka
24 Jul 2024, Lincoln University, Christchurch

On behalf of the students at the School of Landscape Architecture, we would like to invite you to participate in the student/professional Wānaka taking place at Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki | Lincoln University on Wednesday 24th July 2024.
This will be a joint event between students and professionals across multiple disciplines: Landscape Architecture, Architecture and Planning. The Wānaka will focus on the University campus, and more specifically the Arboretum. Design is an effective tool for having conversations about possible landscape futures, and this will be a chance to model a co-design approach.
Project Overview
The project for this year’s Wānaka is located within the Arboretum at Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki | Lincoln University. Lincoln University is planning to improve the current Arboretum by incorporating a green, multi-functional student facility that will encourage the use of the Arboretum.
The aim is to create a versatile learning environment independent of the University with multi-functional spaces and facilities to support activities such as writing retreats, post-graduate areas, and artists in residence. It also needs a flexible studio environment with adaptable floor plans. As this is a green project sustainable building principles, materials, and practices should be included within the design process as well as a renewable energy source for self-sustainability. Whilst the space is independent, it is still going to be a part of the University, therefore connection with the surrounding space within the Arboretum needs to be considered.
This will be a group project where each team will be made up of members from each of the disciplines. Each group will walk around the Arboretum to find the best location for the new multi-functional whare. The groups will consist of a mix of students (of all years and disciplines) and professionals. All members will have equal roles and responsibilities. We anticipate 4 to 5 groups with 5-6 people in each group.
The whare is not a marae, as this role is taken by Ngāti Moki at Taumutu, but a safe space for students to meet, host and share experiences. The new building will need to be around 100m2 in size.
Te Ari Prendergast (Architect from Warren and Mahoney) is involved in the Campus Redevelopment Plan and will act as the external advisor for the Wānaka.
