Urban Community Gardens as Multimodal Social Spaces
Community gardens are becoming a regular part of urban open spaces, including parks and greenways. More than just self-built community initiatives, design professionals are increasingly involved in contributing to the design and construction of these spaces. To create successful projects, it is important for landscape architects to understand how community gardens function in an urban environment. Using cases from Asia and North America, the talk explores the different ways community gardens contribute to the social life of cities and communities.
Speaker JEFF HOU
Jeff Hou, PhD, FASLA, is Provost’s Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore. His work focuses on community design, civic engagement, public space for democracy, and empowerment of marginalized communities. In a career that spans the Pacific, Hou worked with indigenous tribes, farmers, fishers, and villagers in Asia and inner-city immigrant youths and elders in North America on projects ranging from wildlife conservation to bottom-up community placemaking. Before joining NUS, he was Professor of Landscape Architecture and director of the Urban Commons Lab at the University of Washington, Seattle.
