Auckland's artwork plan and New Plymouth foreshore Pride of Place Award winning landscape architecture projects were helping shape the face of New Zealand, a leading expert has said.

The plan to establish major artworks in downtown Auckland and the development of New Plymouth s foreshore and promenade clinched the supreme trophies at the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) awards in Wellington on 13 March 2006.

NZILA president Renee Lambert said that the biennial Pride of Place Awards highlighted the importance of establishing and honouring a national design direction that ensured the creation of places with a distinctive NZ landscape character. ``The emergence of a strong sense of place is due to a better understanding of ourselves as a nation and, as a profession, having the confidence and ability to express that understanding.
Contemporary landscape architecture in New Zealand has over the last decades slowly established a voice that is now clearly recognising our uniqueness in the world.
We have reinforced the need to undertake collaboration within our projects and integrate other professional knowledge. We have a better understanding of our social history and how that influences strongly our design responses.
`We have begun to respect local knowledge and its contribution to our work. Above all, we have asserted a pride in our profession, as exhibited through the awards, that acknowledges our own local constraints and the intimate involvement we, as landscape architects have within the landscape and all its elements."

New Zealand's landscape design expertise is world-class, prominent expert and New Zealand landscape architect awards judge Simon Smale says.

``Our landscape design expertise ranks as world-class, evident in projects such as New Plymouth Foreshore work, Manukau Square, Lumley Tower Plaza and Vodafone Plaza.''
Smale said the remarkable redesign of civic spaces such as Manukau Square manifested a maturing of our identity as a multicultural nation firmly rooted in the South Pacific.
The Matakana farmers market north of Auckland was already making a major contribution to revitalization of the district and community.
The Manukau Square design used many Pacific references, and navigation, weaving, rafts, drums, fishing, mats, plants and birds are all represented.
The high historic values of the St Johns Cemetery (the small chapel on the site was built in 1847) demanded an overriding concern for respect for and continuity with historic character.
Redevelopment of the University of Canterbury library-registry plaza strengthened the area as a central campus space. In Marlborough the redesign of the Spy Valley winery entry area showed a distinctly contemporary feel and vitality well matched to the growing status of the local wine industry.
Smale said the Paraparaumu public library project was the first stage in an overall Kapiti coast town centre development. All planting was selected from ecosystems associated with the Kapiti coast -- kohekohe forest, titoki forest, and wetlands. Local Otaki aggregate for exposed aggregate paving and stone mulch is also used to reflect local geology and character.

New Zealanders must be wary as a nation of growing too fast without careful thought to collaborative design as the country's landscape changes shape. The challenge facing New Zealand was one of rapid change and the speed of development as a society and country needed to be carefully managed, Renee Lambert, president of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) said.

``My belief is that we as a landscape profession are the the key to successfully navigating that change. We accept that change is going to happen and projects must be robust well thought through and with leadership in sustainable design.

``We need an holistic view to the challenges we are facing. But we are in the right place to professionally to have an influence.

``These awards have highlighted that projects that have been been collaborative have stood out above all others in where we need to head as a country.''

The New Plymouth foreshore project was the best example this year in combining with engineers, council and local community.

New Zealand's landscape design expertise is world-class, prominent expert and New Zealand landscape architect awards judge Simon Smale says.

``We are a nation renowned for the quality of outdoor environments and we are now providing those environments the respect and the attention they deserve by including world-class landscape design in our management of them,'' awards judge Simon Smale said.

``Increasing collaborative between designers of buildings - architects - and designers of outdoor spaces - landscape architects - is seeing much better integration of buildings and open space.''
